Paying the Utilities

In China, the utilities (water, electricity and gas) can be paid online using Alipay and WeChat Pay.

Opening a new accounts for the utilities are not necessary (compared to most countries in Europe) as the utilities are linked directly to the landlord and not to the tenant(s).

The process is quite straightforward as per below:

  • πŸ’² Payment: by Alipay or WeChat Pay.

  • πŸ“† Frequency: depending on the compound, usually ranging from payment every 1 - 2 to 3 months. If late payment of the utilities, the utilities will be stopped by the operating companies.

  • ⚑️ Electricity: pay by Alipay / WeChat Pay based on your monthly consumption, see below guidance.

  • πŸ’§ Water: pay by Alipay / WeChat Pay based on your monthly consumption, see below guidance.

  • πŸ”₯ Gas: pay by Alipay / WeChat Pay based on your monthly consumption, see below guidance.

  • πŸ’° Budget: allocated around 10EUR to 20EUR per month and per tenant, please note that these amounts may greatly vary based on the season, habits of the tenant(s), etc.


⚑️ Paying the Electricity Bills.

Paying the water bills is very straightforward in China, please follow the below guideline for all the details:

  1. Login your Alipay account and click on the β€œUtilities” icon on the homepage.

  2. On the β€œUtilities” page, you will need to connect with mainly these 3 sections: Electricity / Water / Gas.

  3. Click on the β€œElectricity” section and select the city β€œShanghai”

  4. Choose the first option β€œε›½η½‘δΈŠζ΅·εΈ‚η”΅εŠ›ε…¬εΈοΌˆηΌ΄θ΄Ή)β€œ the department which will receive your payment.

  5. Enter the number of the electricity account (the number can be found in the group notice on WeChat on our group, if missing, please contact our team on WeChat), tick the payment agreement on the bottom and click β€œNext”.

  6. Well done! Your account is now fully setup and you will be able to pay for the utilities, if you need more information, feel free to contact our team on WeChat.

Paying the gas bills is very straightforward in China, please follow the below guideline for all the details:

  1. Login your Alipay account and click on the β€œUtilities” icon on the homepage.

  2. On the β€œUtilities” page, you will need to connect with mainly these 3 sections: Electricity / Water / Gas.

  3. Click on the β€œGas” section and select the city β€œShanghai”

  4. Select the first option if you live in Xuhui/JingAn/Huangpu/Changning District. Select the second option if you live in Putuo/Hongkou/Yangpu/Pudong District.

  5. Enter the number of the gas account (the number can be found in the group notice on WeChat on our group, if missing, please contact our team on WeChat), tick the payment agreement on the bottom and click β€œNext”.
